What Should I Look for When Buying a Hiking Backpack?

Deciding what type of hiking backpack to buy can sometimes be a difficult task, especially if this is the first time you’ve got one or even been on a hike before. There are many different models available from different brands, but which is the best for you?

Here is a guide that will help make your choice easier!

Hiking Backpack Types

Although there are thousands of backpacks on the market, this article will talk mainly about daypacks. Two main types exist – frameless packs, and framed packs.

Frameless packs have no exterior frame, they have no hip belt, and they are often lighter than framed packs. These packs are usually smaller, and they are great for someone who does not carry much weight on their back.

Framed packs have hip belts and exterior frames, making them heavier. These are better for someone who carries more weight, or for longer hikes.

Hiking Backpack Sizes

Daypacks range in size from 10L – 50L. 10L – 20L daypacks are smaller, and are better for shorter trips, or for carrying less weight. 20L – 30L packs are better for someone who carries less weight, or for longer trips. 30L – 40L packs are ideal for someone who carries more weight, and for longer trips or hikes where you will be packing lots of gear. 40L – 50L packs are the largest

Hip Belts Frameless and framed packs are the two main types of daypacks, and they have different benefits. Frames and hip belts make packs more comfortable and supportive, however they are heavier. Lighter packs are great if you tend to carry less weight, however if you don’t carry much weight, or you carry more weight, framed and hip belt packs will support the weight better.
